Auto Sunroof Market Research

report.com - Auto sunroofs came into being together with automobiles and they even became the mark of luxury automobiles and luxury configuration once. Nowadays, the auto sunroof is no longer the patent of luxury automobiles, while many economy automobiles are also equipped with auto sunroofs.

In 2010, the sales volume of a auto part utomobiles bmw in China was 18.06 million, increasing by over 30% YOY. It has been a development trend of China's automobile industry to install sunroofs. China's auto sunroof market is also developing rapidly with the rapid increase in output and sales volume of automobiles in China. In 2010, the scale of China's auto sunroof market exceeded 3 million sets. The major shares of China's auto sunroof market have always been occupied by such foreign-owned auto sunroof giants as Webasto, coco, Brown, etc. As the world's largest auto sunroof manufacturer with over 100 years of history, Webasto is always engaged in providing high-quality auto sunroof products for automobile manufacturers and automobile users in the world. In 2009, in order to meet the demand of China's automobile market developing at top speed, Webasto expanded the auto sunroof production bases in Changchun and Shanghai, introduced the world's leading production lines of fully-automatic panoramic auto sunroof and at the same time equipped multiple world's leading assembly lines of the automatic auto sunroofs. As the new factories in both places were officially put into use, the annual production capacity of Webasto will reach 2 million sets in China.

The supporting customers of Webasto in China include Beijing Benz, BMW, Shanghai GM, FAW-Volkswagen, Chang'an Ford, Shanghai Volkswagen, Wuhan Shenlong and other famous automobile joint ventures. Webasto also provides auto sunroof supporting services for Saic Motor, FAW Car, Great Wall Automobile, Chery Automobile and many other manufacturers of China's independent brands aston martin , and leads China's auto sunroof market with the market share of over 50%.

Foreign-owned auto sunroof products are prohibitively expensive for many domestic complete vehicle m car news anufacturers in China. Currently, increasingly more domestic enterprises in China begin to enter the auto sunroof industry, such as Taizhou Yifa, Zhejiang Shenghuabo, Taizhou Yuejin, etc. However, due to the difficulties of technology, capital, etc., these enterprises have neither formed certain scale nor provided supporting experience for well-known complete vehicle manufacturers. The auto sunroofs produced by China's domestic enterprises have single varieties, weak compatibility and quality and unguaranteed after-sales services, which is an important reason for their difficulty to develop rapidly. The prices of auto sunroofs produced by foreign-owned enterprises are generally above CNY 5,000, while those produced by China's domestic enterprises will enjoy over CNY 1,000 of gross profits even if they are priced at CNY 2,000. It is predictable that increasingly more enterprises will launch into R&D and manufacture of auto sunroofs. Without doubt, they must enter the OEM market with high gross profits and free themselves of the mistakes of only supporting the remodeling market and the aftermarket; otherwise they will be eliminated gradually.

Avoid Getting Burned by Questionable “Energy Saving” Devices

PRLog (Press Release)– Mar 28, 2011– Customary methods of lowering heating bills include improving insulation and sealing cold air leaks.  BBB, however, warns consumers to beware of people selling devices with promises that they will perform like insulation or significantly reducing heating costs.

These energy-saving mechanisms can cost between $40 and $6000. Some of the gadgets are of questionable value while others are outright bogus.

The scam usually begins with a postcard inviting the recipient to attend a dinner to hear a pitch about energy-saving options for the home.

Based on BBB experience, many people who attend these seminars are seniors who are looking for ways to bring down high energy bills.  Once the pitch is over, the participants are persuaded to allow the company to visit their homes for an inspection to determine what can be done to lower those bills.  Complaints to BBBs across the country say the sales representatives typically come from another state and are difficult to contact once the work has been done.  Other reports detail shoddy workmanship installing the product.

According to Connecticut BBB President, Paulette Scarpetti, "Consumers are looking for ways to reduce their monthly energy costs. Scammers know this and try to capitalize on it.  The way to protect yourself is by looking into these kinds of products and their sellers' claims."

One of the many questionable home energy-saving devices being touted is a do-it-yourself blueprint to construct a 60-120 watt solar panel array for under $200.  The website http://www.open4energy.com/ labels the kit a scam, describing it as "Worthless plans to build a technically unfeasible project."

BBB urges consumers to do some research before agreeing t alfa romeo o any energy saving sales pitches:

Get advice on energy-saving tips that you can implement at home with the help of local experts.  Contact your utility company to set a conservation target for your household.  Energy suppliers offer free tools and resources to help reduce your energy consumption.

Avoid unsolicited door-to-door sales calls and high pressure pitches from contractors offering furnaces, windows, roofing and other home improvement projects.  Carefully read any energy-savings claims and get information about products' performance before signing a contract or spending any money on them.

Make sure contractors are licensed and reputable: Ask friends and family for referrals, and the contractor for references.  If any electrical work is required to install a device, ve chrysler rify that the electrician is licensed and registered, and check other consumers' experiences with the company at http:// www.bbb.org.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Cooling-Off Rule gives you three days to cancel a signed contract if you sign it in your home or a location other than the contractor's permanent place of business, such as a hotel/motel or restaurant.

If you are unable to resolve an issue regarding the sales pitch, contract or device, file a complaint at http://www.bbb.org/.

Engines like the one found in the Ford EcoBoost F150 have benefited from high-performance upgrades and raw, turbocharged power. http://www.grapevineford.com/index.htm

Consider the following: a 6-cylinder EcoBoost F-150 can produce the results of a typical 8-cylinder engine, and a 4-cylinder produces like a 6, giving you maximum power and more torque, all while offering substantially improved gas mileage. So how ferrari does EcoBoost technology improve Ford F150 fuel economy? Dual water-cooled turbochargers take excess energy from the engine's exhaust and use it to rotate a turbine whee corsa l which is coupled to an air compressor that significantly increases the Ford EcoBoost's per liter output. While turbocharged engines aren't usually known for their gas saving abilities, the EcoBoost features fully machined direct gasoline injection and a Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) system that augments Ford F150 fuel economy and increases overall performance.

Ford is currently set to equip ninety percent of its North American models with EcoBoost engines, including 1.6 liter models, 2.0 liter models, and a 3.5 liter EcoBoost F-150 with class leading fuel economy. 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe Available at Leading Worcester Hyundai Dealership

PRLog (Press Release)– Mar 16, 2011– The 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe, available at Herb Connolly Hyundai, has got all of the l cadillac eading industry safety technology feat corsa ures that a car should offer.  Listed below are just some of the features that has left Hyundai fans buzzing.

The Santa Fe features six standard airbags, including side air curtain airbags. The combination of side and curtain airbags, which help protect the head and body during side impacts, can reduce fatalities by more than 52 percent, according to the IIHS. The Santa Fe has rollover sensors for the side curtain airbags. When the sensors detect a potential rollover, the control module triggers the head-curtain side air bags and safety belt pre-tensioners to help protect passengers against serious injury.

All Santa Fe trim levels come standard with Electronic Stability C chevrolet ontrol (ESC), one of the industry's most effective life-saving technologies. NHTSA studies show SUVs equipped with ESC experience 63 percent fewer fatalities in single-vehicle crashes.

Front and rear disc brakes are standard and are coupled with a four-channel Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) that includes Brake Assist, a technology providing maximum braking force when a panic stop is detected. The system also uses Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), which automatically equalizes the braking force to the front and rear axles, based on the vehicle loading conditions.

All seating positions feature three-point seatbelts and adjustable head restraints. Front-seat active head restraints help prevent whiplash by automatically reducing the space between a front occupant's head and the head restraint during a rear collision. The auto-fold style rear- seat head restraints on outboard seats also improve overall visibility, while providing easier rear-seat fold-down capabilities.

Santa Fe also features a standard Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), which alerts drivers if one or more tires are under inflated. An illuminated indicator light on the dash lets drivers know if a aston martin tire needs inflation so corrective action can be taken.

Against Libya's rebels, Gadhafi controls the skies

President Barack Obama warned that the U.S. and its NATO allies are still considering military options to stop what he called "unacceptable" violence by Gadhafi's regime. NATO decided to boost flights of AWACs surveillance planes over Libya from 10 to 24 hours a day, the U.S. Ambassador to NATO Ivo Daalder said.

"I want to send a very clear message to those who are around Colonel Gadhafi. It is their choice to make how they operate moving forward. And they will be held accountable for whatever violence continues to take place," Obama said during remarks in the Oval Office Monday.

Libyan warplanes launched multiple airstrikes Monday on opposition fighters regrouping at the oil port of Ras Lanouf on the Mediterranean coast a day after they were driven back by a heavy government counteroffensive aimed at stopping the rebel drive toward Tripoli, Gadhafi's stronghold.

One strike hit near a gas station in Ras Lanouf, blasting two large craters in the road and wounding at least two people in a pick up truck.

The rebels oppose any Western ground troops deploying in Libya, but they're pressing for a no-fly zone to relieve them of the threat from the air. The rebels can take on "the rockets and the tanks, but not Gadhafi's air force," said Ali Suleiman, a rebel fighter at Ras Lanouf. "We don't want a foreign military intervention (on the ground), but we do want a no-fly zone. We are all waiting for one."

Arab Gulf countries joined the calls for a no-fly zone, with the foreign minister of the United Arab Emirates saying a conference of his country's neighbors that the U.N. Security Council should "shoulder its historical responsibility for protecting the Libyan people."

Still, Western military intervention does not seem imminent — and the warnings may be an attempt to intimidate Gadhafi with words before deeds. British and French officials said the no-fly resolution was being drawn up as a contingency and it has not been decided whether to put it before the U.N. Security Council, where Russia holds veto power and has rejected such a move. Western officials have said a no-fly zone does not require a U.N. mandate, but they would prefer to have one.

In the battles over the weekend, Gahdafi's forces unleashed their strongest use of airpower yet in the nearly three-week-old uprising. A powerful assault by warplanes, helicopter gunships and heavy barrages of artillery, rockets and tank fire drove the opposition forces out of the town of Bin Jawwad, 375 miles (600 kilometers) east of the capital.

The counteroffensive blunted what had been a steady advance by a force of 500 to 1,000 rebel fighters pushing down the coastal highway along the Mediterranean Sea west toward Tripoli. The rebels were forces back to Ras Lanouf, about 40 miles to the east.

The past three days of fighting killed 30 rebels and wounded 169, said Gebril Hewadi, a doctor at Al-Jalaa Hospital in Benghazi. The rebels are now struggling to set up supply lines for weapons, ammunition and food, with many living off junk food, cookies and cans of tuna. They are waiting for rocket launchers, tanks and other heavy weapons to arrive with reinforcements from their headquarters in the eastern city of Benghazi.

The fighting also appears to have outright shut down oil operations at Ras Lanouf and the larger nearby oil port of Brega, which were already operating at minimal capacity. Ahmed Jerksi, an oil official at Brega, said that port had stopped working the past few days because all the personnel had fled. He and Mustafa Gheriani, an opposition spokesman in Benghazi, said they believed Ras Lanouf had stopped as well, but it could not be directly confirmed on the ground.

The fighting in Libya, which produces nearly 2 percent of the world's oil and delivers most of it to Europe, continued to push oil prices ever higher. Traders are worried the strife may spread to other oil-rich nations. Crude prices settled at $105.44 on Monday. They peaked earlier in the day at $106.98 per barrel, the highest since Sept. 26, 2008.

Libya appears to be sliding toward a civil war that could drag out for weeks, or even months, as rebels try to oust Gadhafi after 41 years in power. The opposition already controls the entire eastern half of the country — from Ras Lanouf to the Egyptian border.

Libya's main population centers lie along the country's main east-west highway on the Mediterranean coast and rebels are trying to push the front line westward toward the capital. Their biggest obstacle along the way is Sirte, Gadhafi's hometown and a bastion for his forces, just west of Bin Jawwad. Taking Sirte would be a major morale boost to the opposition and give it almost a clear way to Tripoli.

The opposition also holds several cities in the west close to Tripoli. But the government appeared to have taken back one of them, Zawiya, after days of heavy fighting. Monday saw the heaviest bombardment yet in the city, just 30 miles outside Tripoli, said one resident. He said tanks and artillery opened fire around 9 a.m. and by the afternoon, rebels had been driven out Zawiya's main square.

"The tanks are everywhere," said the resident, who fled the city in the afternoon. "The hospital is running out of supplies. There are injured everywhere who can't find a place to go."

Gadhafi's warplanes give him an extra edge in the fight against rebels. At the very least, they intimidate rebel fighters battling in open desert with little cover.

Still, so far Gadhafi has not brought — or not been able to bring — the full firepower of the air forces against the rebellion. In Sunday's fighting, the massive artillery and rocket bombardment did more to break the rebel ranks.

That may be in part because of the weakness of his air arsenal and worries over the loyalty of its personnel. Over the decades, Gadhafi built a large air force, estimated at around 500 combat aircraft and helicopters. On Google Earth, dozens of Soviet-era MiG and Tupolev fighters can be seen lined up at air bases in Sirte and in the deserts of the southwestern part of the country.

But well over half of the aircraft are believed to be unable to fly, because they are outdated and because under decades of sanctions Libya was unable to procure spare parts, according to GlobalSecurity, a U.S.-based website that monitors world militaries. Several years ago, Libya signed a deal with France to repair its 1970s-era French Mirage fighters, but only four of them were brought up to speed.

Two of those repaired Mirages are now in Malta, illustrating another of Gadhafi's worries — the loyalty of his pilots.

Early on in the uprising, two air force colonels defected and flew their Mirages to the Mediterranean island nation. The crew of a Sukhoi fighter ditched their aircraft in flight, parachuting away and letting it crash south of Benghazi, rather than bomb targets. In fighting Saturday, rebels succeeded in shooting down a warplane, using anti-aircraft guns captured in the uprising.

But rebels clearly fear Gadhafi could bring out even heavier firepower from the air.

Mustafa Abdul-Jalil, the head of the interim government National Council set up by the opposition in Benghazi, has met with delegations from European countries and discussed possibilities for a no-fly zone, or even Western airstrikes on bases from which attacks are launched, an opposition official close to the council said Monday.

He did not say where the discussions stood and would not specify which European countries sent delegations. He also said they discussed the possibility of Western recognition of the National Council as Libya's government. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the discussions.

In Tripoli, Libyan Foreign Minister Moussa Koussa denounced what he said were U.S., French and British contacts with the eastern rebels. "There is a tremendous conspiracy against Libya," he said. "For sure there is a conspiracy to divide Libya. It seems that the British are yearning for the colonial era."

In Washington, White House spokesman Jay Carney said the U.S. and its partners are considering a wide variety of military actions, including a no-fly zone. He said another option was to provide weapons to rebel forces, though he cautioned that there were still many unanswered questions about what groups comprise those forces.

"I think that it would be premature to send a bunch of weapons to a post office box in eastern Libya. We need to not get ahead of ourselves in terms of the options we're pursuing," Carney said.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague told the House of Commons Monday that "we are working closely with partners on a contingency basis on elements of a resolution on a no-fly zone, making clear the need for regional support, a clear trigger for such a resolution and an appropriate legal basis."

But U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates warned last week that imposing a no-fly zone would amount to an act of war because "a no-fly zone begins with an attack on Libya" to destroy its air defenses. He also cautioned that an attack on Libya could drag the U.S. military into another conflict, even as nearly 150,000 troops continue to battle in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Obama said Monday he has also authorized $15 million in humanitarian aid to help international and non-governmental organizations assist and evacuate people fleeing the violence in Libya.

U.N. officials warned that up to 1 million foreign workers and others trapped in Libya are expected to need emergency aid over the next three months, and they appealed for $160 million to deal with the crisis.

Carnival group hit by fire cheered in Rio parade

The Portela group made a dramatic entrance into the throbbing Sambadrome stadium late Sunday, its 300-strong percussion section abruptly quieting its thundering drums and crouching down in a moment of silence for its losses in the fire.

With silence descending over the crowd for a few seconds, the drummers leaped back up with a raucous beat as Portela's thousands of members marched on to the cheers and applause of fans.

"Our community looks beautiful tonight," Portela president Nilo Figueredo said. "It is really a community of warriors."

The fire in early February ripped through warehouses where Portela and two other elite samba groups were preparing for Carnival, incinerating more than 8,000 feather and glitter costumes and many of the big, meticulously decorated floats.

Portela had 3,255 outfits destroyed or severely damaged. Many wondered whether the group, which has not missed a parade in its 84-year history, would be able to put on a show at all. The two nights of lavish parades that began Sunday are watched by millions in Brazil and abroad.

Once the shock passed, however, it became clear the 2011 Carnival would be marked more than ever by the festival's quintessential ability to bring hope and happiness, even if fleeting, to those who have little. It also steeled samba group members' fierce allegiances in a city where fans are as devoted to their groups as they are to their soccer teams.

"We're ready and we're strong — no one is sitting here sad, thinking of what we lost," one member, Maria Alice Alves, clad in a metallic silver and blue outfit, said before Portela marched in.

Some longtime members admitted to being a bit anxious about making an entrance that could be marred by what was lost in the fire.

"Our objective is always perfection," said Alessandro Meireles, a 30-year-old who has been a member of Portela's percussion section for a decade. "Even if we can't win, we're going to put on the show people expect of us."

He was referring to the top-tier samba competition, in which groups vie fiercely to have their performance judged the best. There's no cash prize for first place, only a trophy and the bragging rights that last a year until the next Carnival. Portela has won the samba competition 21 times, more than any group, most recently when it shared the title in 1984.

But this year the contest's governing body decided there was no way Portela, Academicos do Grande Rio and Uniao da Ilha do Governador could recover from the fire in time, so they will not be judged. That means they don't risk being relegated to the second-tier samba competition, the fate of each year's last-place finisher.

It also meant Portela was competing only for pride Sunday night — and celebrating its comeback from disaster.

Police have concluded their investigation and found the fire was accidental.

Nevertheless, it wiped out months of work by the residents of Madureira, Portela's working-class home base, and dealt a devastating blow to the neighborhood's seamstresses, construction workers and salesgirls who leave behind their workaday lives once a year when they take on their glamorous Carnival alter egos in the Sambadrome.

Bianca Monteiro, 22, recalled how she cried in February when she saw on TV the thick smoke rising from the warehouses.

Now in her fifth year as one of the "passistas," the fit young dancers who showcase the group's best samba dancing skills, Monteiro feared the worst for Portela, where her father helps keep the 4,000 performers moving along in harmony and six other relatives also parade.

"We're all blue-blooded to the core," Monteiro said, a reference the group's blue and white colors.

As soon as the flames were out, hundreds of people from Portela's home base, in the poor neighborhood of Madureira, mobilized to remake what was lost. The community center put aside classes and health services for the past few weeks to focus entirely on rebuilding the costumes.

For the past month, everyone who was able to do so pitched in, from relatives of group members to students in the canceled classes, even dentists who work out of the community center, said Val Carvalho, head of Portela's social projects.

Their work made it possible for the show to go on.

"Everyone contributed in whatever way they could: They glued parts of the costumes, swept the floor or just bought food and drinks for the others," Carvalho said. "The fire only took our costumes, not our love for Portela."

To sisters Viviane and Geisy Alvarado, who got to the bleachers early for a good spot up front, Portela had already won.

"They could be out there in T-shirts," said Geisy Alvarado, 23. "They're gorgeous."

Most Asian stocks fall on global recovery worries

Crude prices jumped above $106 a barrel as political unrest continued to shake the world's key oil producing region. In currencies, the dollar moved up against the euro but fell against the yen.

The uncertainty over the outcome of a bloody rebellion in OPEC-member Libya aimed at overthrowing longtime strongman Moammar Gadhafi outweighed any optimism over improving employment figures out of the U.S.

Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 stock average dropped 1.7 percent, to 10,510.94. Sentiment in Tokyo was downbeat on growing political uncertainty after Japan's foreign minister resigned Sunday over illegal political donations, dealing a new blow to Prime Minister Naoto Kan's embattled administration.

Toyota Motor Corp., the world's largest newsmatic.com">car maker, dropped by 2.7 percent, hurt not just by oil prices but also a credit rating cut on Friday by Standard & Poor's due to profitability concerns. Because serious disruptions in oil production could put the global economic recovery in jeopardy, traders are closely watching Libya, where fighting between government supporters and its opponents has cut oil production in the OPEC nation in half.

Investors are also concerned violent protests and political upheaval could intensify in the rest of the region, where Iran, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Oman and Snewsmatic.com">audi Arabia have more than 60 percent of the world's proven oil reserves.

Analysts at Citigroup Global Markets, in raising their average Brent Oil estimate from $100 to $105 for 2011, said in a report Monday that the unrest "seems contagious and as more countries are affected, low-risk regimes can become higher risk."

Kuwait, in particular, seemed vulnerable as groups there have called for mass demonstrations outside parliament Tuesday to demand that the government step down.

"If any of the more heavyweight OPEC producers are caught in the storm the potential impact on price increases," the report said.

Soaring oil prices spooked investors on Wall Street Friday with the Dow Jones industrial average losing 88.32 points, or 0.7 percent, to 12,169.88. Algeria keeps lid on social unrest _ for now

They were Communal Guards, state-armed militia on the front line of the country's long battle with Islamist extremists, and their protest served as an eloquent example of the breadth of social unrest in this gas-rich North African nation.

Algeria's leadership, riddled by corruption and at the mercy of the army, is sitting in a circle of fire, with a restive populace at home and pro-democracy uprisings in neighboring Tunisia and Libya that are shaking the Arab world to the core.

Two months of strikes, sit-ins and attempted protest marches are raising questions about whether Algeria, which waged a brutal battle against insurgents for nearly two decades, can satisfy myriad and mounting demands for jobs, housing, higher salaries, proper medical benefits — and, trickier still, answer calls to end the army's dominance and build a real democracy.

Since the Sept. 11 terror attacks a decade ago, Algeria has become a critical U.S. partner and Muslim ally in the global war on terrorism. Should Algeria unravel — as some say it well may if fundamental changes are not made — it would be one more strategic blow to the West.

Those in charge here are worried. They have lifted a 19-year-old state of emergency as opposition leaders and citizens have long demanded, cut prices of some staples, and pledged $286 billion to development of a country whose resource wealth hasn't reached most citizens.

"Algeria is a mafia with a flag," is the common street response to the question, "How goes it?" Such disdain is long standing. It is the growing indignation that is new.

A leading figure in what once was Algeria's longtime single party, the National Liberation Front, recently denounced the exclusion and secrecy that defines the nation's leadership, shared by the president with army generals in the shadows.

Abdelhamid Mehri compared the Algerian regime to those in Tunisia and Egypt, where the presidents were ousted in popular uprisings, and warned of a potential social "explosion" at home without a peaceful transition to democracy.

"The voices demanding regime change ... are numerous," he wrote in an open letter to President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, in office since 1999. "They have multiplied in recent months in such a way that it is impossible to ignore them or postpone the response."

Gas and oil money, the memory of nightmarish past instability, and the veneer of democracy accorded in part by a noisy but tethered press are cushioning Algeria from the full-throttle anger that tipped countries like Tunisia or Egypt to push their leaders out.

Judicial and medical workers and university students are among those holding intermittent strikes, each with a set of demands. They join the jobless, the homeless and the hungry who rioted in early January around Algeria when the price of cooking oil and other staples increased. The violence left five people dead.

Five others have died by self-immolation, among numerous attempts, which mimic a Tunisian man who set himself aflame in an act that triggered the revolution there in mid-January — and sparked the Arab world unrest.

To defuse tensions, Bouteflika lifted a 19-year-old state of emergency on Feb. 24, while keeping bans on demonstrations in place in the capital. The president's office has also announced a raft of economic measures aimed at placating the despair and, most recently, exempted men over 30 from required army duty if they have not yet served.

Despite the generous economic promises, these are fixes, not solutions.

"You can buy silence and peace, but it can't last for long," said Mostefa Bouchachi, a human rights lawyer who has led a now-fractured coalition of forces that drew thousands to two pro-democracy protest marches in Algiers in February — put down each time by battalions of riot police. "It can calm spirits for months, but it doesn't solve the problems of Algeria."

The voice of outrage is supplanting a pervasive sense of fear that long ensured the silence of the average citizen, and even the Communal Guards — the eyes and ears of security forces — are standing up.

The Guards, comprised of civilians, don't want a confrontation with the state they have served at their peril. But they feel humiliated by lowly government job offers put forward now that the service is gradually being disbanded, and emboldened by the protesters from all quarters of society.

"We took up arms in 1994 and with terrorism declining they want to get rid of us," said Ali Abdellaoui, 44, a detachment chief from Dar El-Beida, some 25 kilometers (15 miles) from the capital, who has spent 16 years with the force.

"Suddenly, we have no income, no rights ... There are injured among us, those who lost a hand, a foot. They get a pathetic little pension," he said as police hustled the protesters to the side of the boulevard.

Deputy chief Yahia Salim said the Guards want improved medical benefits, housing and a pay increase retroactive to 2008, to match increases accorded to police.

"Someone who fought terrorism now finds himself working as a housekeeper," said Salim. "It's unjust."

By the standards of unrest in neighboring countries, protests in usually feisty Algeria, which wrestled independence from French colonizers in 1962, are timid, so far. No one wants to revisit the chaos and violence of the "national tragedy," the battle between security forces and Islamist extremists that all but decimated the nation, killing an estimated 200,000, costing tens of billions of dollars and nearly bringing Algeria to its knees.

Algerians proudly say that they are ahead of other Arab countries, having opened the door to a multiparty system in 1988. But the door was quickly slammed it shut when a now-banned Muslim fundamentalist party was poised to sweep legislative elections. The army decision to end the experiment triggered the insurgency.

Since then, the ever opaque world of Algerian politics has grown murkier.

An array of political parties fills the seats of parliament, run by a three-party presidential coalition that puts its stamp on policies decided in the higher spheres — by the army and the president. Deciphering who holds more weight on what issues is a national game.

Once, it was far simpler.

The country was ruled by the army for nearly three decades, until 1988. Generals were the presidents. With the exception of a short interlude, Bouteflika is the only civilian president Algeria has known since independence from France 49 years ago.

Today, "Algeria is a military dictatorship that uses a civilian to run the state," said Lahouari Addi, an Algerian sociologist at France's prestigious institute Sciences Po.

Be they ordinary citizens or professional observers, the consensus is the same: any hope for democracy in Algeria means dismantling the military pedestal on which the regime sits — not removing a president.

"I think we're at the limit. There is an illusion of change but a demand for profound change," said Nasser Djabi, a University of Algiers sociologist. "We must change the (military-dominant) system. We don't need to change names. The president and parliament must be responsible before the people."

Neither Bouteflika, 74 and ailing though said to be sharp even in long meetings, nor the coterie of generals behind the scenes have yet to take the courageous steps experts say are needed to open the political process to Algerian citizens.

Calls for change are coming from surprising quarters.

"Mr. President, you are supposed to be the father of the nation," writes the head of the Algiers Parents of Students Union in a letter to Bouteflika.

Salah Amer-yahia explains the birth of the organization at the height of violence in the mid-1990s and its belief in Bouteflika's plan to develop a "culture of peace" in Algeria.

Violence has diminished, he said, but "a decade later, the adolescents of yesterday see their horizons blocked."

Now, the letter goes on, they are risking their lives sneaking to Europe in small boats on the high seas, or setting themselves afire. It ends with a plea to end the army's shadow rule: "We need change to install a state of law."

Havel's library to move to 16th-century palace

The Vaclav Havel Library, now located at two different locations in the capital, is a nongovernment organization dedicated to his life and works and modern Czech history. It was inspired by American presidential libraries.

The palace is located near the monumental Czech Foreign Ministry and only few minutes walk from the Prague Castle, where Havel spent 13 years as president.

A 200-million koruna ($11.4 million) reconstruction of the palace to suit its new purpose has been designed by Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill. It still must be approved by conservationists.

The library was established in 2004, a year after Havel left office.

France mourns death of top actress Annie Girardot

Girardot, with awards for both film and theater in a decades-long career, had suffered for years from Alzheimer's disease and a Paris hospital said she died on Monday.

With an enthusiastic nature that never seemed to fail, Girardot captured the hearts of French lovers of cinema and theater.

"The French cinema is a widow today," said Culture Minister Frederic Mitterrand.

Film director Claude Lelouch, who made her his star in six movies, compared Girardot to Edith Piaf, saying she was the stage "equivalent" of the French singing legend. However, Piaf gained worldwide recognition whereas Girardo's talent stayed closer to home.

Among Lelouch's films starring Girardo was the 1969 "Un homme qui me plait" (A Man Who Pleases Me) in which she played opposite Jean-Paul Belmondo.

Girardot was acclaimed for her comedic performance in 1954 at the Academie Francaise, but made her movie debut the following year with Andre Hunebelle's "Treize a table" (13 at the Table). However, it was not until 1960 that her film career was truly launched with Luchino Visconti's "Rocco and His Brothers" in which she starred with Alain Delon.

During her career, Girardo performed in over 100 films, and won France's coveted Cesar award three times — in 1976 for best actress for her role in Jean-Louis Bertuccelli's "Doctor Francoise Gailland," for best supporting actress for "Les Miserables" in 1995, and for playing a possessive mother of a musician in Michael Haneke's "Le Pianiste" in 2001.

Despite her productivity, Girardot was pushed aside by innovative directors like Francois Truffaut, and she spent years sidelined.

French television on Monday repeatedly showed video of her accepting the best supporting actress Cesar for "Les Miserables," which marked her comeback. Girardot was so overcome with tears she had problems speaking, but managed to say, "I don't know if the French cinema missed me, but I missed the French cinema crazily."

President Nicolas Sarkozy praised Girardot's "surprising mixture of strength and sensitivity" on the screen. He called her decision to take part in a documentary on Alzheimer's the "last testimony of (her) generosity."

Girardot is survived by her daughter, Julia. Funeral arrangements were not immediately known.
